Speaker: Kim Marie Villanueva (Program Coordinator)
Children with ASD have very restricted play interest and may not have enough motivation to learn and communicate with others. In order to have an effective training process, it is important to have some powerful reinforcers ready and continuously develop reinforcement as this is the backbone of teaching.

Ms. Villanueva will introduce ways to keep your child engaged through lecture and role play. She will also teach ways to increase a child’s motivation to learn and communicate with others.

Subtopics:
– Different Types of Reinforcement
– Assessing Likes and Dislikes
– Presenting Reinforcement in Different Ways
– Use of Reinforcement
10:30am-10:45am Break
10:45am-12:00nn Communication Temptation and Directing
Speaker: Camille Lajara (Program Coordinator)
One of the most common skills deficit areas of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder is the use of speech for communication. Due to the lack of effective ways to communicate, some individuals on the spectrum engage in to problem behaviors to get access to the things they want, while others choose to be dependent on their caregiver all their lives.
When individuals with ASD are taught how to use their speech functionally, it will not only improve their communication skills, but also will decrease problem behaviors, improve social skills, and will learn to be more independent.

Ms. Lajara will talk about Communication Temptation, a language program that is used to teach our students for them to effectively communicate. The following are ways that we present the program:
• Requesting: teaches the students the power of speech.
• Directing Others: teaches the students to spontaneously communicate their needs and wants.

Subtopics:
– List of the child’s preferred activities
– Choosing activities
– Task Analysis
– Role play
– Hands-on practice
12:00nn-1:00pm Lunch break
1:00pm-2:15pm Picture Exchange Communication System (P.E.C.S)
Speaker: Marian Mationg (Senior Behavior Therapist)
Children with ASD are not often socially motivated by their environment to communicate. Most language and communication skills are obtained from daily interactions with people and learning from the environment around them. For most of our non-verbal children with autism, they will need to learn one of the primary communication areas which is requesting, before learning more social-based ways to communicate.
One of the key communication tools to teach non-verbal children with ASD is through the use of Picture Exchange Communication System (P.E.C.S). Using this system will not only reduce a child’s behavioral problems, but will also encourage the spontaneous use of communication.

In this workshop, Ms. Mationg will introduce this tool as a way to supplement a child’s communication skills through lecture, demonstration, and hands-on practice.

Subtopics:
– Setting up the student’s teaching environment
– Expanding the spontaneous use of P.E.C.S
– Role play
– Hands-on Practice
